Welcome Back! It’s been a short but restful summer, and another fantastic school year is upon us! I look forward to greeting you on our first instructional day, August 14, 2012. Classroom assignments will be posted on the front door after 5:00 p.m. on August 10, 2012.
All questions and/or omissions will be addressed at 9:00 a.m. on August 14, 2012.
Enclosed are some important reminders and dates to calendar:
· Please remember that our school hours are 8:00 a.m.-2:24 p.m. Monday through Friday for all grades (K-5). Please make sure that your child comes on time daily! After your child’s class has left the yard, please bring your child to the office so we can escort them to their room without disrupting instruction. For safety reasons, and to avoid congestion and accidents, please say goodbye to your child on our school playground, and do not walk your children to their classrooms.Kindergarten children will be escorted for the beginning days by a volunteer or by me when possible.
I encourage you to check out our website on an ongoing basis: www.fairburnschool.org. My page is listed under the Teacher section and then by my name. To access the calendar, click on the calendar title on the top of the page. As dates may change, I keep updating my calendar throughout the year, so you can always check there for changes and/or upcoming events. Our teachers also have their own pages (except for our new teachers) and Planet Bravo keeps an updated lesson plan page as well. Please go on and review class rules, resources, and why our school excels!
(K-5) Dismissal will be at 1:24 p.m. Although we are sending you the list of Tuesday dates, please check with the Wednesday Wire or on our website each week as some weeks are exempt from this schedule.
I am pleased to welcome the following new staff members:
Ann Chen will be teaching second grade in room 7. She comes to us from both Marvin Avenue and Wilshire Crest Elementary Schools where she served as the GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Coordinator in both schools! She also has a strong technology background.
Kathryn Long will be teaching second grade in room 17. She comes to us from Wadsworth Elementary School where she integrated the Writer’s Workshop into the English Language Arts program. Kathryn also has received extensive training in LAUSD’s Art Program Curriculum.
Michelle Podemski will be teaching first grade in room 16. She comes to us from Miramonte Elementary School and brings strong skills in DIBELS (our current primary grade assessment) and the Writer’s Workshop Program.
This year promises to be the best ever! I look forward to welcoming you back in a few weeks!

- I am pleased to announce that every fourth and fifth grade student will be issued a net book for use in school only. In the computer lab over the last two weeks, 3rd and 4th grade students have been learning the importance of proper typing form. Everyone did a great job learning the basics. However there are three steps to great typing any one can learn. Step 1: Practice, Step 2: Practice and Step 3: PRACTICE! So take some time this summer and put your typing skills to the test. Whenever you're at a computer, use correct typing form, and when you have a minute, with your parent's permission, go on the web and play one of the awesome typing games at the top of http://www.planetbravo.com/fasweek

The Minimum Days are: November 9, 14, 15, 16 and March 4,6,7,8 for Parent Conferences and May 31st for Professional Development. Our final day will be scheduled by our Leadership Council after school starts
- Our parking lot is for staff only. Please allow our staff the needed access. STAR students should enter the STAR program using the STAR gate as this gate was provided to ensure additional security and safety for our students. Please do not ask your child to walk through the staff parking lot.
- LAUSD will continue to provide after-school activities on the yard until 6:00p.m. daily for grades 2-5, which include an hour of supervised homework. Kindergarten and First Grade students must be picked up on time or be enrolled in the STAR after-school program. STAR has agreed to provide additional classes to meet our children’s needs and interests. Parents are not allowed to provide supervision after school on our yard, and/or discipline children from other families! Children remaining on our campus after dismissal must be enrolled in STAR or Beyond the Bell. We are fortunate to have beautiful parks nearby and students immensely enjoy play dates at their homes. Please help us keep our students safe!!
- I strongly encourage you to attend the monthly Parent meetings on campus. I will be there to update you with the latest news, and answer questions. Also be on the lookout for Coffee with the Principal! I enjoy our time together at as some of our best ideas have originated there!
