The Principal Perspective
Elizabeth J. Abramowitz
Every room I visit is filled with highly engaged students demonstrating higher level thinking skills throughout the curriculum. Our faculty has been expanding their band-width to encompass various questioning strategies to actively engage students’ thinking processes.
I highly recommend utilizing the following questioning techniques when discussing books/TV/movies with your children:
1. Compare and contrast parts/relationships/ideas and elements of a story.
2. Discuss a new ending or changing an element to a story.
3. What would the world be like if………
4. What might have occurred if………
5. Discuss this story from a different perspective
Any thought-provoking question will challenge your child to refine and expand their critical thinking skills.
Let’s work together to increase our childrens’ proficiency in analyzing, evaluating and synthesizing information.
